These die hard Raider fans and self proclaimed members of the Raider Nation have endured many losing seasons and they believe when the Raiders win it makes things a little easier in day to day life. The Oakland Raiders haven’t made the playoffs since the 2001-2002 season when they lost a game in overtime to the New England Patriots after a controversial penalty was called. On Sunday the Raiders faced the Houston Texans in Texas for their week 5 match up. Before the game there was a tribute to Al Davis and a moment of silence, which was done at all games around the league. Oakland Raiders players wore a sticker on the back of their helmets that said, ‘AL’.”

Oakland Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell threw two touchdown passes, one to Darrius Heyward-Bey, his first career NFL touchdown reception, and one to Chaz Schilens. Sebastian Janikowski kicked three field goals over 50 yards each. “When I watch the Raiders and things are going well in the fourth quarter I get tense. I am always worried some weird penalty will get called just like in the Ice Bowl,” says Juan Maria of Oakland. Juan is referring to the playoff game in January of 2002 against the New England Patriots when the Raiders lost the game on a penalty that many Raider fans think was an incorrect call by the officials. The fourth quarter of the game was definitely a nail biter with the Texans being within striking distance until the end. The Texans drove the ball to 5 yard line with only 7 seconds remaining when Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw an interception in the end zone to Michael Huff of the Raiders. Juan Maria exclaimed, “When Huff got that pick in the end zone I screamed out and then turned and hugged my brother and told him Al Davis would have been proud.”

One post reads,” Just Win, BABY, This one was for you Al.” Gary has been a plumber in Oakland for over 17 years and has noticed with the current unemployment rate and economic conditions some people don’t have a lot be happy about. “Al Davis passing away was tough on me and my guys but a win like this makes next week a lot easier,” says Dimodana.    

Through the years Al Davis led the Oakland Raiders to 3 Super Bowl Championships. The Raiders won Super Bowl XI, XV and XVIII. Two of the Super Bowl winning teams were quarterbacked by Jim Plunkett. The Raiders were the first team to win a Super Bowl after entering the playoffs from a Wild Card spot in Super Bowl XV. With this victory over the Houston Texans in week 5 the Oakland Raiders advance to 3-2 and will face the Cleveland Browns in week 6.
